Does your washing machine have a funky smell? Do you feel like some of the laundry soap is being held hostage in your clothes? Did you kids just have a fund day in the mud then followed up with an ice cream and you just washed their clothes? Have you ever cleaned your washing machine? Not like take a towel with some household cleaner and wiped it down. I am talking about cleaned because you know the Mommie-in-Law is coming for a visit the house need to be perfect clean, clean, clean. Well, sister, it is time to clean your washing machine.
Here is how to clean your top loader washing machine.
4 cups White Vinegar
1 Cup of Baking Soda
2 to 4 drops of Tea Tree Oil, optional
Items You Need
Dirty Washing Machine
Rag and/or Towel
Heat the vinegar till warm.
Make sure the washing machine is empty.
Start the washing machine with the settings on the largest load size using hot water.
Pour in the warm vinegar and the tree tree oil drops (optional)
Once the machine fills, allow it to run for a few minutes to ensure the vinegar mixes into the water.
Add in the baking soda.
Allow the washing machine to run for a few more minutes to mix in the baking soda.
Stop the machine. Each machine is different, some need to open the lid, pull a knob, push the stop button but simply stop the machine however you do it on your machine.
Using the rag or towel and dip it into the water, vinegar, and baking soda mixture and clean the rest of your washing machine. Wipe down the top of the tub, the knobs, the dispensers, lid on both the inside and out, panels, and areas the mixture does not reach. You can use the toothbrush to get areas the rag does not fit in to clear out holes.
Let the washing machine sit with the mixture in it for at least 30 minutes up to 12 hours. Overnight usually works really well.
Start the machine and allow it to finish the entire cycle.
When it is finished take a towel and wipe down the tub to remove any residue.
Now time to start a load of rags and towels from all this cleaning.
A Few Points to Remember
If you have never cleaned your washing machine you may want to repeat this process one more time.
If you have a top loader washer machine starts to smell, leave the lid open when it is not in use. This will allow the interior of the machine to dry. As well as service as a signal that someone can start laundry.
I do my best to clean our washing machine on the last day of the month every month. This is just my personal preference fro several reason. I want to lengthen the life of our machine so I keep it clean. I know that between a baby and a teenage the things that will go through the washing machine may not be the best for it so if I can clean it to help it perform better, I will.
We are a bleach free household for a variety of reasons. The main reason is sue to the amount of chemicals in the bleach. I do not want that near my children. The other reason is the fear of a child accidentally ingesting bleach and causing significant harm to the child. It is easier to keep bleach out my home than worry about something so simple. Please understand we do have chemicals in our house. We manage them and handle them accurately. A lot of people use bleach to do laundry and to clean machines. Beach can be harmful on the gaskets in machine as well.
The cleaning detailed above costs less than $4 to do approximately 7 or more times which would cost around $0.57 per use. If you purchase the washing machine cleaners from the store it is around $12 for 5 times which would cost around $2.40 per use.
